Familie De Simone
Hamburg • Overijse, Belgien • Neapel, Italien

Sergio's father Eduardo died in 1964 without ever knowing what had happened to his son. Sergio's mother Gizella de Simone found out about the crime at Bullenhuser Damm in 1983 and took part in the memorial service in Hamburg on April 20, 1984.

However, she did not want to believe that Sergio was dead and hoped that he was still alive until her death in 1988. Her son Mario, who was born after the war, his wife Clotilde and their son Edoardo regularly attend the memorial service on April 20, as do her cousins Andra and Tatiana Bucci.

Andra and Tatiana Bucci have made it their mission to share as much of their lives as possible. They have published their own memoirs ("Always remember your name") and travel with school classes to the Auschwitz memorial site. They also act as contemporary witnesses and speak to pupils at schools in Italy about their lives and the fate of their family. At the beginning of March 2022, they were awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.
